Harvard WingTip Collection - Kansas City

Kansas City (“The Singles Era, Part 3”) Back in Kansas City late in 1983, the duo rejoins the vibrant alternative scene thriving at the time. Free from the shackles of High Speed/Lamborghini, Charles and Stephen go into yet another basement (and dining room) of local engineer Jim Skeel, whose space is known as Skeel’s Reels. They record “Luxury Suite” with Charles on bass, vocals and guitar; Stephen on drums and atmospheric guitar; Mister Misty (Gary Schroeder) on xylophone and percussion; and the horn section from the Black Crack Review. It immediately becomes one of the funkiest songs in the annals of Midwestern funk. The group re- records “Fall Flat” with Stephen on guitar, drums and vocals; Charles on bass and vocals; and Cat Cooper and Cinna Turnbull, two local artists, on background vocals. These two songs are released on vinyl by the duo. Finally, there’s an excursion into expansion and alternate identities with “Mystery of Fashion.” Stephen plays guitar, adds drum fills, and adds vocals; Charles plays bass; the lead vocals are sung by a trio of really good theatrical choral singers: James McGuire, Patty Corum and Margaret Bailey. This becomes the only Tips’ song to be accompanied by a video. [Mastered in 2017 by Scott Hull of Masterdisk off a digital transfer from a previous two-track master. All songs Harvey/Seltzer.
