Harvard WingTip Collection - Minneapolis
Minneapolis (“The Singles Era, Part 2”) Living in Minneapolis in 1983 in the house of Charles’s parents and fresh off the London experience of meeting future film director Tom Barnes and a fun group of Spaniards and South Africans in Queensway, Stephen and Charles team up with drummer Matthew Zimmerman. Because of their High Speed/Lamborghini contract they continue writing pop-inspired tunes, in their own way. “New Salad Bar” features Stephen on guitar and vocals and Charles on bass. “Ironic futility” might best sum up the theme of this song. “Sometime When” might be the most collaborative of the duo’s songs in that they literally took turns writing lines. Stephen plays bass and sings background with Matthew; Charles plays guitar and sings lead. “Remote Control” became Charles’s wonderful obsession. Was the vision ever achieved? There are several versions, but this is the closest of those that are usable. Charles sings lead, background and plays guitar; Stephen plays bass and lends support. All songs are recorded by Freddie in the basement of the house, thereafter known as Meg ‘n’ Art Studio. [Four-track original transferred to digital by Charles. “New Salad Bar” and “Sometime When” remixed by Stephen and mastered in 2017 by Scott Hull of Masterdisk off a digital transfer. “Remote Control” mastered by Scott Hull off a digital transfer from cassette. All songs Harvey/Seltzer.
